Incredible as it may sound, this description is eclipsed by Josephus when he gives an illustration of a woman called Mary who is forced by starvation into cannibalism. She roasts her breastfeeding baby and devours half the body:
She murdered her son, and then roasted him, and ate half of him, and kept the other half hidden. Evil men soon came in and, smelling the horrid scent of this food, they threatened to cut her throat immediately if she did not show them what food she had been preparing. She replied that she had saved a good portion of it for them, and uncovered what was left of her son. Then they were horrified and astonished, and stood aghast at the sight … the men went out shaking, never having been so frightened in their lives … they left the rest of the meat to the mother.38
